trophyClub Championships: 5 July 2008

All members: from recent beginners to seasoned competitors are invited to cross swords and display the best sportsmanship in the London Fencing Club Championships 2008!

Location: Finsbury Leisure Centre, EC1

Date: Saturday, 5 July 2008  (this is one week before the Nationals to enable you to harvest the maximum number of medals)

The Championships will be in all three weapons. Women and men will fence together - with a handicap.

Check in:
Epee - Midday
Foil - 1 pm
Sabre - 2 pm

Fights will start shortly after the check in and we'll aim to finish by 5 pm with a Grand Finale in each weapon. To help us with organizing this event please let me know in advance about your participation when ever possible!

Epee fencing will be using the electrical scoring while foil and sabre will be electrical when possible. Inter gender handicap: 2 hits in pool fights, which will be to 5 hits, and 6 hits during the direct elimination fights to 15 hits. (Fights with the handicap are an excellent  training tool too: it'll teach you not to give up and not to relax until the last touch has been scored. Try them during your free fencing bouts.)

Trophies are awaiting the Champions and the best recent beginner! And it's a good tradition for the winners to buy everyone a drink afterwards! (Assume Litten Tree pub on Old Street from 5.30 pm)

Defending Champions 2007:
Anthony Kingsley (foil)
Adeel Iqbal (epee)
Jacob Clark (sabre)

Tulip Noir

tulip noir Tulip Noir, the theatrical fencing group from Avignon gave a couple of performances at our club back in April. We've learned that apart from the stage applications, the theatre fencing (escrime artistique) is also a sport of its own, with championships and other competitions world wide. The performances are judged by their artistic originality and the finesse of the technique - somewhat similar to the figure skating competitions.

To all those busy members who, being under pressure of work or intense social life or family commitments, sometimes have to go without fencing for a length of time: We're most happy to arrange for you complimentary individual lessons programme which will help you back to the piste! (And this way your membership fees won't be wasted too!)

If your class falls on a bank holiday please feel free to come to a different class instead.

Regency Evening at the V & Apresentation swords

For all the culture vultures I'd like to recommend the evening of Regency period dance and music, live duelling, and parlour games which will take place at Victoria and Albert museum on Friday 13 June 2008, 18.30-21.30.  Test your knowledge in the Jane Austen Quiz, and listen to the renowned historian and broadcaster Dan Cruickshank discuss the delights and dangers of Regency London.

Re-enactment of Regency duels by fencers from the Royal Armouries will take place at John Madejski Garden from 19.00 till 20.20

The event is free (except talk £8.00, concessions available)
