Fontainebleau, what and where? Royal Palace

France southeast of Paris. Its chateau (built by Francis I) was long a royal palace and is now the summer residence of the president of France. Population: 15,942. The town has a grand air with immense historic interest. It is also internationally renown for being host to major show jumping, racing and rock climbing events.

So, what's the best way to get there?
Eurostar from London Waterloo to Paris Gare du Nord (Ј49.50 if booked in advance), then one stop by RER to Gare de Lyon where frequent trains to Fontainebleau (cost Ј5 ) take you there in 45 minutes.

And then?
Arrive on Friday, 4 November and check into the hotel with the views on the Royal Castle. Back on Sunday evening. In between we're in the hands of Priscille!

What is she planning for us?
Many of you have met Priscille who was coaching at the club in July and August. Priscille grew up in Fontainebleau and knows the area as the back of her hand. We're coming first of all to have a friendly fencing match with her club on Saturday afternoon. However Priscille promises much more then that. Visit to the Royal Castle. Flights on her aeroplane (extra Ј25 please). Medieval artists' village. Hike in the forest which is the largest and most beautiful national forests in France. Frequent visits to the bar run by Priscille's best friend. Bored French women who want to practise their English on you. Anything else you want and dare to do!

How much will it cost?
Ј180 per person including the hotel (two people sharing), the competition fee and transport in Fontainebleau. Priscille insists on giving special discounts to full time artists, musicians and similar. Contact me for the details.

How to sign up?
Please get in touch to confirm that places are still available. You will then need to post the cheque for Ј180 payable to Swordplay to my attention at 74 Hawksley Rd, Stoke Newington, London N16 0TJ - please note that the number of places is limited and they'll be allocated on first paid - first served basis!

Fontainebleau School. Gabrielle d'Estrйes and one of Her Sisters c. 1590

This is French school of Mannerist painting and sculpture. It was established at the court of Franзois I, who brought Italian artists to Fontainebleau, near Paris, to decorate his hunting lodge&colon; Their work, with its exuberant ornamental and figurative style, had a lasting impact on French art in the 16th century.
